There’s a fine line between love and hate, so fine that you don’t know you’ve lost balance until it’s too late.
I’m not sure exactly when I lost my balance, all I know is that he was to blame.
Dane Winters.
The boy who’d spent most of his life hating me for reasons I never understood.

** ** ** ** ** **

It was no secret that I hated her, but only I knew why.
She was off-limits.
And then our separate worlds collided with one tragedy.
It wasn’t her fault, I knew that, but I wanted her to hurt the way I did, and I needed someone to blame. She was an easy target.
Kennedy Monroe.
The girl I’d picked on all our lives.
And the woman I barely tolerated.
Until the line between love and hate was no longer visible…

PROLOGUE

Kennedy

There’s a fine line between love and hate, so fine that you don’t know you’ve lost balance until it’s too late.

I’m not sure exactly when I lost my balance, all I know is that he was to blame.

Dane Winters.

The boy I’d spent almost all of my life hating.

And now? I find myself on the other side of that very fine line…

Dane – 16 years old

I stood to the side, watching it all unfold in the wings. Jason’s voice grew louder, and attracted the attention of the students passing the hall. Kennedy looked around, her eyes growing frantic, her cheeks reddening in embarrassment. I played Varsity football with Jason, he was the all-star quarterback, and while I thought the guy was a complete tool, what I disliked most about him was his interest in Kennedy Monroe. He was a Senior; she was a sophomore like me, and he could have his pick of any girl in the school – why did it have to be her?

“Jason, please, can we go somewhere private and talk about why you’re freaking out?” Kennedy’s voice was soft, and filled with desperation.

“Is it true?” Jason asked. He towered over Kennedy’s small frame, and if I hadn’t orchestrated this whole thing I would’ve told him to back the fuck off and leave her alone. But I couldn’t. Because she was the enemy.

For as long as I could remember, my father had warned me about the Monroe family. He told me to stay away from them, that their family had hated ours since our forefathers had founded this town. For a while, I listened, I stayed away, and I allowed my fathers apparent hatred for the Monroe family to become my own. It wasn’t until after we returned from this past summer that it all changed.

Kennedy had changed. In just three short months, she went from a gangly, dorky teenager to a gorgeous, stunning girl who intruded my very thought, both in sleep and consciousness. She’d started school a year earlier, making her younger than the rest of us, and what I thought she lacked in social graces she definitely made up for in smarts. She embodied everything I wanted, but couldn’t have. And that’s what had led me here.

“Is what true? I don’t know what’s gotten in to you, but we can’t do this in front of the entire school.”

Kennedy’s voice brought me back to the present, and I straightened, leaning against my locker on the opposite side of the hallway.

“Open your locker, Kennedy.”

I stiffened when Jason’s tone grew harder, but reminded myself that I had to watch rather than get involved and stop it.

Kennedy fiddled with the combination on her locker, and as soon as it popped open, the photos fell out. They consisted of pictures of Jason, close ups of his face, of him at practice, and I even managed to get a few of him at home in his room. It was all very stalker-ish.

I’d outdone myself, and couldn’t help the wicked grin on my face.

“What the hell?” Jason bellowed, picking up a few of the pictures scattered on the floor. “I can’t believe it, he was right.”

My grin fell slightly, and I hoped to God he didn’t mention my name.

“These aren’t mine,” Kennedy said quickly. “I swear, Jason, they aren’t.” She reached out to grab his arm, but he pulled away.

“I didn’t take these!” Kennedy held a few pictures in her hands, and looked up at Jason as if he’d believe her. I knew he wouldn’t. I’d made sure of it.

“Then why are they on your locker?”

“I-I don’t know,” Kennedy replied.

With a shake of his head, Jason looked between Kennedy and her locker on last time. “Dane was right,” – fuck – “You’re a freak.”

Students laughed, and Kennedy slammed her locker shut before running towards the girls’ bathrooms, tears glistening on her face.

It was a dick move, but that feeling of morbid satisfaction uncurled itself in my stomach. It was just too easy.

“You actually did it.”

I looked to the side, and saw my best friend Reid standing next to me.

“Of course I did.”

Reid sighed. “You are such an asshole.”

I pushed away from my locker, and slipped the strap of my bag over my shoulder before heading towards my next class.

“I know.”

Kennedy – 14 years old

The sound of laughter echoed behind me, and finally died down when the bathroom door closed. I slipped into a stall, and closed the toilet seat before sitting down and taking a breath. My heart was racing, and my face was hot. Humiliation warmed my skin, and spurred the tears that had started falling down my cheeks. I shouldn’t have been surprised, but Dane had been quiet for the past weeks and I’d assumed his need to embarrass me on a daily basis had finally been satisfied. Apparently he’d been busy planning his latest prank.

I wiped my eyes, and took my cellphone from my bag. We weren’t allowed to keep our phones in our bags, but I always kept it on silent, and on hand in case of emergencies. If anything happened at school, they’d have to call my father, and I had to avoid that at all costs. There was only person I could call when I needed help, only one person I knew who would drop everything to be there for me.

I pulled up Charlie’s number, and waited for him to answer. He was coming home from college for the weekend, and I hoped he was close. I still had four hours of school, but I needed to leave now. I didn’t want to have to stay and deal with any more crap. I’d had my fill for the day.

My brother’s voice came through the phone, and I relaxed, if only a little. “Hello? Kenny?”

“C-charlie…” My lip started trembling.

“Kennedy, what’s wrong?”

“Are you close?” I asked. “Can you come get me, please?”

“I’m ten minutes out, baby girl, you hang tight.”

My shoulders sagged in relief. “Okay, I’m at school. I’ll meet you in the parking lot next to the sports field.”

“I’ll be there.”

I ended the call, and after righting myself in the mirror, I checked the hallway to make sure everyone, including the teachers, were in class. When it was clear, I snuck out, and quietly made my way towards the back exit of the school. No one would see me, and I could cut class for the rest of the day without anyone knowing until the teachers took roll call. By then I’d be gone.

I never cut class, ever, but today I felt like I needed to. I needed to see Charlie, and waiting four more hours wasn’t going to happen. I hadn’t seen him in almost a month, and it had been unbearable without him.

As soon as his blue Ford F250 stopped in the lot, he was out the door, and had his arms around me before I could say anything.

I hugged him close, and breathed in his familiar scent of leather, and pine. The girls always ate him up, but nothing compared to having him as my big brother. He was all I really had, and had been protecting me for most of my life.

“I’m here,” he breathed into my hair.

I pulled away, and wiped the fresh tears that had slipped down my eyes. “I’ve missed you.”

He gave me his boy-ish grin, his eyes bright and so alive. His hair, which was a darker shade of blonde, had grown, and hung on his forehead. He was such a man now, but I still saw the little boy who always bandaged up my ‘booboo’s, and the teenager who stayed with me the first time I got my period because there was no one else who could do it.

“C’mon,” he tugged my hand, and helped me into his truck. “We can grab some ice-cream, hit our favorite spot, and you can tell me what has you looking like a hot mess.”

I giggled, and felt the weight of the last month drift away as Charlie drove us away from school and into town. He picked us up some ice-cream, and took me to the only spot he knew I loved more than any other place. The lake.

It was a ten-minute drive outside the town limits, and at this time of year it was beautiful. Warm, and sunny, and safe.

I laid out a blanket from Charlie’s truck on the deck, and took a seat, dipping my toes in the water. Charlie sat down next to me, his big arm around my shoulders, and pressed me against his side.

“Okay, kid. Tell me what Dane Winters did this time.”

I looked up at him in surprise.

“Jewel called me,” he explained.

Jewel was Dane’s twin sister, and while our families couldn’t stand each other, Jewel and I had managed to become close. We could never hang out like normal best friends did, but we made it work anyway.

Charlie said her name with reverence, and while I wanted to know what that was about, I didn’t want to pry. He would tell me if he’d wanted me to know, and I left it at that. I had more pressing issues that needed to be cleared up, and the only way I could do that was to lay it all out.

“Spill it,” Charlie said.

And so I did. I told him everything.

That day at the lake was one of my favorite days, and I hadn’t known until much later in my teen life that it would be one of the last memories I’d have with my brother.

Reading Grove Review

I received an ARC of When You're Mine and I have to say that it was as amazing as the first two book by K. Langston. This story follows Barrett and Tabitha who previously know each other through Maddie. Barrett was Maddie's boss back in Boston and Tabitha is one of Maddie's best friends and old roommate. Both have this unbelievable draw towards each other and Tabitha has some reservations. Things in her past, along with Barrett's past relationship with Maddie, keep her from being with Barrett.

But what Barrett wants Barrett gets. He knows he wants Tabitha and won't be told no. He's the kind of man everyone secretly wants. The one that walks in the door with an objective in mind and just goes for it. He soon realizes that in order to have Tabitha he just needs to take her.

Tabitha is a complex character. She is strong but severely weak at the same time. She is scared of so many different things that keep her from her happiness. She's been hurt by the people in her past and wants to keep herself from getting hurt again.

As always I love when you get to see old characters return and there was no shortage of that here. Maddie and Holden work out there own issues with the whole Barrett being around. Archer and Katy are excepting their first child. For me, I absolutely love Archer so to see him excited about being a father is absolutely amazing.

The story was wonderfully written and you could feel the love and heartbreak that Barrett and Tabitha go through to get their HEA. I can't wait to see more of them hopefully in the next book, which of course features Cannon. Yay!!!

What I Thought Was True by Huntley Fitzpatrick

Book Description

Gwen Castle's Biggest Mistake Ever, Cassidy Somers, is slumming it as a yard boy on her idyllic Nantucket-esque island this summer. He's a rich kid from across the bridge in Stony Bay, and she hails from a family of fishermen and housecleaners who keep the island's summer people happy. Gwen worries a life of cleaning houses will be her fate too, but just when it looks like she'll never escape her past--or the island--Gwen's dad gives her some shocking advice. Sparks fly and secret histories unspool as Gwen spends a gorgeous, restless summer struggling to resolve what she thought was true--about the place she lives, the people she loves, and even herself--with what really is.

Excerpt

Chapter One of What I Thought Was True

Nothing like a carful of boys to completely change my mood.

There's a muffled expletive from inside Castle's Ice Cream, so I know Dad's spotted them too. A gang of high school boys tops his list of Least Favorite Customers—they eat a ton, they want it now, and they never tip. Or so he claims.

At first, I barely pay attention. I'm carrying a tray of wobbly root beer floats, foil-wrapped burgers, and a greasy Everest's worth of fried scallops toward table four out front. In a few weeks, I'll be in the rhythm of work. Balancing all this and more will be no big deal. But school got out three days ago, Castle's reopened last weekend, the sun is dazzling, the early summer air is sticky with salt, and I have only a few more minutes left in my shift. My mind is already at the beach. So I don't look up to see who just drove in until I hear a couple of whistles. And my name.

I glance back. A convertible is parked, slanted, taking up two spaces. Sure enough, Spence Channing, who was driving, shakes his hair from his eyes and grins at me. Trevor Sharpe and Jimmy Pieretti are piling out, laughing. I whip off my Castle's hat, with its spiky gold crown, and push it into the pocket of my apron.

"Got any specials for us, Gwen?" Spence calls.

"Take a number," I call back. There's a predictable chorus of ooo's from some of the boys. I set the tray down at table four, add soda cans and napkins from my front pockets, give them a speedy, practiced smile, then stop by the table where my brother is waiting for me, dreamily dragging French fries through ketchup.

But then I hear, "Hey, Cass, look who's here! Ready to serve." And the last boy in the car, who had been concealed behind Jimmy's wide torso, climbs out.

His eyes snag on mine.

The seconds unwind, thin and taut as a fishing line cast far, far, far out.

Then I stand up, grab my brother's hand. "Let's get home, Em."

Emory pulls away. "Not done," he says firmly. "Not done." I can see his leg muscles tighten into his "I am a rock, I am an island" stance. His hands flick back and forth, wiping my urgency away.

This is my cue to take a breath, step back. Hurrying Em, pushing him, tends to end in disaster. Instead, I'm grabbing his ketchup-wilted paper plate, untying my apron, calling to Dad, "Gotta get home, can we do this take-out?"

"Not done," Emory repeats, yanking his hand from mine. "Gwennie, no."

"Gettin' slammed," Dad calls out the service window, over the sizzle of the grill. "Wrap it yourself, pal." He tosses a few pieces of foil through the window, adding several packets of ketchup, Emory's favorite.

"Still eating." Emory sits firmly back down at the picnic table.

"We'll watch a movie," I tell him, wrapping his food. "Ice cream."

Dad glances sharply out the take-out window. He may be brusque with Em from time to time, but he doesn't like it when I am.

"Ice cream here." My brother points at the large painting of a double-decker cone adorning one of the fake turrets. Yes, Castle's is built to look like a castle.

I pull him to the truck anyway and don't look back, not even when I hear a voice call, "Hey, Gwen. Have a sec?"

I turn the key in Mom's battered Bronco, pressing the gas. The engine revs deafeningly. But not loud enough to drown out another voice, laughing, "She has lots of secs! As we know."

Dad, thank God, has ducked away from the service window and is bent over the grill. Maybe he didn't hear any of that.

I gun the car again; jerk forward, only to find the wheels spinning, caught in the deeper sand of the parking lot. At last the truck lurches, kicks into a fast reverse. I squeal out onto the blazing blacktop of Ocean Street, grateful the road is empty.

Two miles down, I pull over on the side, fold my arms to the top of the steering wheel, rest my forehead on them, take deep breaths. Emory ducks his head to peep at me, brown eyes searching, then resignedly opens the foil and continues eating his limp, ketchup-soggy fries.

In another year, I'll graduate. I can go someplace else. I can leave those boys—this whole past year—far behind in the rearview mirror.

I pull in another deep breath.

We're close to the water now, and the breeze spills over me soft and briny, secure and familiar. This is why everyone comes here. For the air, for the beaches, for the peace.

Somehow I've wedged the car right in front of the big white-and-green painted sign that marks the official separation between town and island, where the bridge from Stony Bay stops and Seashell Island begins. The sign's been here as long as I can remember and the paint has flaked off its loopy cursive writing in most places, but the promises are grooved deep.

Heaven by the water.

Best-kept little secret in New England.

Tiny hidden jewel cradled by the rocky Connecticut coast.

Seashell Island, where I've lived all my life, is called all those things and more.

And all I want to do is leave it behind.

Reading Grove Review

This is a story about letting go of what you thought you knew and accepting what is actually true. Gwen has grown up working the summers for her father and living with her mom, cousin Nic, and brother Emery. This summer she has decided to take a job as caretaker to Mrs. Ellington opposed to working at her father’s restaurant. The only problem with working for Mrs. Ellington is that she always sees the new yard boy Cassidy.

Gwen and Cassidy have a past together that is filled with hurt and misunderstanding. Neither of them knows how to be honest with each other and let go of what had happened in the past. Gwen holds a grudge better than Cass can, and let me tell you he is extremely patient with her when they try to work things out.

Both Gwen and Cass have their own problems to work out. Gwen doesn’t want to be stuck cleaning houses like her mother or working at her father’s restaurant for the rest of her life. Cass is pegged as troubled because he was kicked out of his old school with his friend and his family thinks he needs to get his life together.

There are a lot of side stories in the book as well. There is Mrs. Ellington and her son, as well as Gwen’s cousin Nic and best friend Viv dating and their problems.

My favorite moments in the book are when Cass is teaching Gwen’s brother Emery to swim. Emery isn’t all there and the moments are really touching. Cass takes his time making Emery feel comfortable and uses things he really loves, like Matchbox cars and Superman, to get him into the water.

In the end it comes down to telling the truth to each other and trusting in the people you are supposed to love. You’re not supposed to put up walls and barriers that make it harder for a person to be with you. Also, you need to realize that things can change and what you believe the story to be may not have been the whole story.

Overall it was a good book and I enjoyed reading it. I’m looking forward to more books by Huntley Fitzpatrick.

Reading Grove Review:

** I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review through MM Good Book Reviews ** http://www.mmgoodbookreviews.wordpress.com

Man Candy is a great story about two people who are trying to find their way in life. Brent is a war photographer that almost got blown up at his last assignment and doesn’t know if he can return to his work. Alex is a college student and stripper/candy shop worker that still depends on his parents help and support so he is scared to tell them that he is gay. The two originally meet at the strip club where Alex works. Brent is immediately intrigued by the younger man, while Alex is drawn the dominate presence of Brent. The two share a moment together and then part ways never expecting to see each other again.

When Brent goes to Putnam on vacation to recover from his last assignment he sees Alex working in the candy shop. From that moment on the two are headed down a path that neither of them can escape. Both are equally drawn to each other and they develop a lover/friend relationship when Alex decides that he wants Brent to be the one to “pop his cherry.” Brent shows Alex how to be a sub to his Dom and how to take and give pleasure. Throughout this time, they also help take care of each other showing how much they truly feel about each other. Alex helped take care of Brent through his migraine and talk to him about his future as a war photographer. Brent helped Alex with his parents reaction to his being gay.

I liked this story because you really felt like the characters really cared about each other. What was to start out as a fling grew into something more. The trust that Alex immediately gave to Brent and how much Brent couldn’t stay away from Alex helped show their true feelings. They were constantly looking out for each other. Overall, it was a good quick read that kept you interested on what was going to happen between the pop his cherry.” Brent shows Alex how to be a sub to his Dom and how to take and give pleasure. But Demi is keeping something from him, and not only will she have to forgive him, but he will have to forgive her too…

Can they erase the time that has passed, and move forward? Or will Demi’s secret and Brody’s mistake keep them from their forever?

*This can be read as a standalone, but it is highly recommended that you read Beneath Your Beautiful to enhance your enjoyment of this book. Due to mature language and adult situations, this book is not recommended for readers under the age of 17.*

Reading Grove Review

Begin Again is the second book in the Beautiful Series and was a great sequel to Beneath Your Beautiful. This book is about Demi and Brody, best friends of Huntley and Grayson, the main characters of the first book. This story will make you cry for the heartbreak that the characters went through and the love that is to come.

Demi and Brody used to be happily in love but it fell apart when Brody wanted to move for his dream job. Demi didn't want to move and wanted Brody to stay. Demi loved where they lived and wanted to stay there with Brody. Brody didn't want to give up his dreams and chose them over Demi. Even though Demi had a huge secret (not going to tell, you need to read the book) to tell Brody, she let him go even though it killed her to do so.

Demi and Brody's story is told around the back story of Huntley and Grayson getting married. Brody has been gone for about a year and is coming back for the wedding. He looks forward to, as much as he fears, seeing Demi again. He misses her terribly and is miserable with the life that he has chose. He brings a date, Sienna, the girl he's been sleeping with the fill the void that Demi left when he decided to leave. This causes problems for Demi, as Sienna is extremely jealous of her. Demi fears seeing Brody again because she never told him her secret that she kept and it nearly killed her.

Throughout the story Demi goes through a rollercoaster trying to figure out what Brody wants from her. She tries to be strong but is slowly falling apart. She is still completely in love with him and always will be, even though she wishes that she could just fall in love with Jeff, Grayson's brother, who has been there for her since Brody left.

I feel bad for Jeff in the story because he is caught in the middle as he is in love with Demi and she just can't love him the way that he deserves. Jeff has been her go to guy since she started falling apart after Brody moved. He is sweet, kind, and caring, but unfortunately he's not Brody.

Brody and Demi go back and forth throughout the story until the day of the wedding when Brody finds out Demi's secret. He is devastated and Demi is relapsing into herself as she sees his heart breaking before her eyes. She knows that she should never have kept the secret but didn't want him to stay for any reason other than it was what he wanted. Brody then realizes how much he has truely hurt Demi by leaving and vows to win her back and never hurt her again.

In the end they both apologized to each other for the pain they have caused and make up.

"I know we have a lot to work through, but it all comes down to one thing. I miss you. I miss waking up with you next to me. I miss seeing you walk around barefeet in the kitchen. I miss kissing you. I miss hearing you sing in the shower. I miss making love to you at all hours. I miss having angry sex with you. I miss having you in my life, Demetria, and I know I can live without you, but dammit, I don't want to." - Brody

Overall, this was an amazing story. I enjoyed seeing Huntley and Grayson again, along with their son, Hunter (my son's name by the way). I loved that even through the heartbreak Demi and Brody still found their way back to each other. And lastly, I really hope that Jeff eventually gets his happy ending.
